Safety Guidelines
History of the River Sweep
Sponsored by Ohio Valley Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) and Ohio River Education (FORE), River Sweep is an annual riverbank cleanup of the Ohio River and its tributaries. Over the years, this nationally recognized event has grown into one of the largest cleanup efforts of its kind, encompassing 3,000 miles of shoreline from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois.
The Ohio’s improved water quality has spurred an increase in recreational use of the river, which also increases litter. Therefore, an annual cleanup is vital. River Sweep also increases public awareness of water quality and promotes stewardship of the Ohio River watershed.

- Watch where you walk — avoid broken glass, rusty nails, poison ivy and more.
- Don’t get in the water — the current can be deceivingly strong!
- Avoid placing yourself in danger. For example, don’t go after trash floating in the river.
- Watch for traffic when working in pull-over areas along the roadside.
- Wear old, comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes.
- Wear gloves to protect you from sharp objects like glass and metal.
- Avoid areas overgrown with shrubs.
- Trash bags provided.
